From my good friend, "Hawkeye":
I can see why Sylvester Stewart would change his name to Sly. Not that there's anything wrong with Sylvester, except it does rhyme with molester and it does remind you of Tweetie's foil. But why switch Stewart to Stone? Al and Jon did fine with the name Stewart. Well, Jon's last name is actually Liebowitz. But it was the Sixties and I guess Stone was more appropriate or politically correct than pothead. So in '67, Sly gets some more Stewarts together—Fred, Rose, and Vaetta—and some other non-Stewarts and form one of rock's first integrated group Sly and the Family Stone. There is no doubt in my mind that Sly would have been a giant in the music field if drugs had not cut him down to size. The drugs killed off a great talent and destroyed a good man in the process. According to a couple of musician friends of mine who were in the studio at the time, Sly was so out of it that he even defecated on himself while he sat at the keyboards. I am not giving you a complete discography. These are all their early albums when they were really cruising down the melodic road. But definitely after 1974, they took a sharp detour down the Hershey Highway. And what Sly left on the keyboard bench was better than those later albums.

in their hearts it is older than Bethlehem and Babylon, older
than Memphis and mankind." ~ H.P. Lovecraft, The Festival
