2010 Hampton Beach Master Sand Sculpting Competition.
The 10th Annual Hampton Beach Master Sand Sculpting Competition is under way in Hampton Beach, N.H., with 10th Competitors vying for $15,000 in purse and entry awards. The Competition runs through Saturday afternoon, when judging – including the people choice award – will take place.
The theme for this year's contest is "Shangri-La". Competitors must use the mystery of the fictional land as inspiration for their entries.
The week began with all 10 competitors contributing to a central sponsor carving.
The tiger, part of the central sponsor structure, was finished by 2009 grand prize winner Carl D. Jara, and received rave reviews from spectators on the first day of the competition.
A sculptor put the finishing touches on a piece dedicated to a local Hampton Beach establishment.

An artist meticulously carves tiny grooves into a sand seashell.
Each competitor begins his or her entry by packing San into a wooden or plastic mold. The molds are then removed at which point carving begins- No forms or structures will be allowed in the final prices.
Fifty-five gallon drums of water are available to help the competitors pack down the sand in their entries.

The Competition runs through Saturday, the public will have its opportunity to walk into the judging area on Saturday afternoon from 1-4 , to pick a favorite. The people's choice winner receives, $1,000. The overall winner as determined by the judges, will win $3,000. The sculptures will be on display with light for night viewing, through June 30.
