Pot-Luck-Humor - Beau Jocque

 

Beau Jocque, in Louisiana Creole, means Big Guy, and in the physical and Zydeco worlds, he was.  He was six foot six and weighed over 270 pounds.  He would put his feet in a wide stance, plant himself in the middle of the stage, with his accordion looking like a squeezebox in front of his giant chest.  His band, the Zydeco High Rollers, would be bouncing around him like spider monkeys.  And the crowd would be screaming and heaving and sweating and jumping around like their shoes were trampolines.  God, he was fun to see.  In 1987, Beau Jocque broke his neck in an industrial accident.  While bedridden, he learned to play the accordion.  Within a couple of years, he became one of the biggest draws in the regional dance hall circuit.  He blended rock, funk, and reggae elements into his zydeco music and his band delivered this hot and heavy behind his gruff, boisterous vocals.  He is probably best known for his single Give Him Cornbread but I have given you a different teaser track below, in case you want to sample his music before downloading an album.  Beau Jocque died on September 10, 1999 at the age of 46 from a heart attack while sitting in his car.
