MisfitsCafe.com - A Festival of Jim Rotondi Albums!

'Full House' is an exciting new musical collaboration between trumpeter Jim Rotondi and pianist David Hazeltine. Recorded live at Smoke, a club in New York, it features a quintet who are an obvious working unit and who draw on a wide variety of influences. This ranges from the leaders straight-ahead jazz roots (playing compositions Joe Henderson and Cedar Walton) through the electronic innovations of the 1970's and `80's (Earth, Wind & Fire's "Reasons" and funky takes on "Love For Sale" and "Out Of This World").

The resulting music is clearly electric jazz of the first order - Hazeltine at the Fender Rhodes using an approach that is both funky and orchestral; Rotondi using the wah wah pedal in a very subtle fashion and soloing with power, finesse and logic. A sure fire winner for listeners who like their bop mixed with slow burning grooves.

Aptly titled to be sure, Jim Rotondi's New Vistas offers somewhat of a new direction for this hard bop trumpeter, who finds himself mixing it up with a cast of new friends. Although he had included a few cuts with Larry Goldings on B3 for his debut Criss Cross release, this session also marks the first time that Rotondi has opted for an organ combo approach that goes beyond the norm with a little extra help from Chris Potter. In fact, many of the saxophonist's statements could arguably be considered some his best recorded work to date, and Rotondi is no less commanding as the leader of this crack team.

On his sixth session as a leader for Criss Cross Jazz, One For All trumpeter Jim Rotondi pushes the hard bop envelope, broadening the music's horizons with a new quintet that utilizes veteran vibraphonist Steve Nelson in place of the usual piano, giving the group a more open expansive sound.

The new release, Four of a Kind, on the Posi-Tone label, is a quartet date featuring Jim Rotundi - trumpet, David Hazeltine - piano & rhodes, John Webber - bass, and Joe Farnsworth - drums.

The disc features three Rotundi originals, one original each from Farnsworth and Hazeltine, along with a rendition of Cedar Walton's arrangement of "Manteca", and three standards, two of them arranged by Hazeltine ("What Kind Of Fool Am I?" and "Love For Sale").

Veteran trumpeter Jim Rotondi has been a fixture in the New York jazz scene for more than two decades. His clear, bold sound and polished soloing have been on display in such diverse groups as Lionel Hampton's and Bob Mintzer's big bands, as well as the powerhouse sextet, One For All, of which he is a co-founder. His most recent release, Blues for Brother Ray (Posi-Tone) celebrates the work of his early musical mentor and former boss, Ray Charles.
