THIS is TRUE...   PUSHOVER: A 63-year-old man from Manila, Philippines, was in line to buy a lottery ticket when a woman cut in front of him. He did the gentlemanly thing, stepping back and allowing her in. The ticket she bought -- that would have been his -- wasn't a winner. The ticket he ended up buying, however, was: 741 million pesos (US$17 million). "When  he won, he kept thinking: how sad for that woman," said Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office chair Margie Juico, "She could have won the big prize if she had just been patient." (MS/AFP) ... Chivalry not only isn't dead, it sometimes pays quite well.   IN THE LINE OF DUTY: An Australian government employee was denied worker's compensation after suffering an injury during a work trip. The claim was denied because the injury occurred during a sexual encounter.  According to Leo Gray, the unnamed woman's lawyer, "It could be that [the woman], in a moment of passion, reached up and grabbed the light fitting, or it could be that the man banged against it." Either way, the light fitting fell and hit her in the face. Andrew Berger, counsel for the work safety agency Comcare, saw it differently. "If it is a quintessentially private activity it is not fair that taxpayers pay for the consequences of that activity," he said. "If they wanted to be protected by worker's compensation they would need to let their employer know" before engaging in the activity. (MS/Australian AP)  ...Note to my boss: I plan on some high-risk activity on my next trip.  Just thought you'd want to know.   THIS DUD'S FOR YOU: Andrew Price, a former employee at a pub in Uphill, England, was drinking at the pub, but when graffiti was found in the men's room, he was accused of having written it. When management told him to leave, he got mad and called them "communists", then walked to the house where he had been staying as a house guest. Still angry and drunk, he made two Molotov cocktails to firebomb the pub. But instead of gasoline, he used diesel fuel in the recipe, which would not explode on impact. He then fell asleep in the yard, and the homeowner found the two devices and called police. Price admitted he had planned to use his 'cocktails' against the pub. He has a prior conviction for arson committed at a previous pub job and was sentenced to two years in jail. (JW/Bristol Evening Post) ...The message he'd scrawled on the men's room wall: "I'm an idiot and I can prove it!"   PRIOR RESTRAINT: "I'm going to stick to my guns because I think I have the right as a business owner to reject service to anyone," insists Mark Prior of Abbotsford, Wisc. Before he opened his strip club, he posted a sign out front: "No Negro's Allowed" [sic]. Of course, such discrimination has been illegal for decades, but Prior either doesn't care, or doesn't think the law applies to him. "If I've got a problem with you it's going to be on the front of my store," he says, and he'll defend it in court if he has to. Prior's previous two businesses failed: a grocery store and a private sheriff's department. "Our mistake," said Dr. Selika Ducksworth-Lawton, a professor of African American history at the University of Wisconsin in Eau Claire, "is sometimes we look for logic in something that is just plain stupid."  (RC/NBC News) ...Right, but you still have to admire the guy just a  little bit for coming up with the business model of running his own sheriff's department.
