The idea for JAZZ JAMBOREE came from a handful of the fans and frequenters of the Warsaw club "Hybrydy" in 1958, when they heard a rumor that the immensely popular Sopot Jazz Festival was to be no more.
The first festival in Warsaw, known simply as Jazz '58, was held in September of 1958 at the "Stodola" student's club, with Krakow also hosting a handful of concerts. It was in that year that Polish writer Leopold Tyrmand came up with the name that holds through today. The Jazz Jamboree quickly became one of the largest and most important festivals in all of Europe. During its initial years, concerts were held primarily at the National Philharmonic. In 1965, the Congress Hall of the Palace of Culture and Science became the main festival venue. The forty-odd editions held thus far have featured some of the world's greatest jazz musicians. The most famous among them have been Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, Thelonius Monk, Dizzy Gillespie, Dave Brubeck, Benny Goodman, Wynton Marsalis, The Manhattan Transfer, Bobby McFerrin, Ray Charles, Keith Jarrett, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, and Michael Petrucciani.

Blue Note Record's French division released Stefano Di Battista's debut, "A Prima Vista", in 1998, but this self-titled disc is the alto and soprano saxophonist's first offering to be made available in the U.S. It comes on the heels of a high-profile guest appearance on Jacky Terrasson's "A Paris..." and, fittingly, Di Battista hired his friend Terrasson to be the pianist on his own record.

Trombonist Dan Barrett leads his Extra-Celestials on a set of spirited small-group swing. The repertoire is full of obscurities (including Benny Carter's "Scratch My Back" and Red McKenzie's "Georgianna," "Mound Bayou," and "Mama, That Moon Is Here Again") and a few superior standards. Barrett (who also plays cornet, wrote all of the arrangements, and takes a rare vocal) is joined throughout by some of his favorite musicians.
