| The rose was sacred to a number of goddesses (including Isis and Aphrodite), and is often used as a symbol of the Virgin Mary. To make a napkin rose, take a paper napkin and unfold it. Then, fold the top edge of the napkin (about 4 centimetres) over towards you. Pinch the upper left corner between index and middle fingers of your left hand (alternatively, you can use middle and ring-finger or even ring-finger and little finger for more accurate and miniature roses). Wrap the napkin around the index and middle finger so that the folded down portion stays on the outside. Keep winding the napkin. Wrap securely but not too tightly Take the corner of the napkin and pull it down and to the right. Pinch the napkin together with your right hand just below your left fingers. Twist the napkin downward from the point at which you pinched below the twist. Twist firmly and evenly to about half way down the lower portion of the napkin. Take the lower outside corner of the napkin and gently pull it upward so it is above where you stopped twisting. Pinch the napkin together just below where you had stopped twisting. Continue twisting the napkin in the same direction as before until you reach the end of the napkin. To give your rose more natural look slightly twirl the centre of the bud and bend down outside petal. Here is what you should get:
