THIS is TRUE:   IF YOU BUILD IT, DUMB WILL COME: Boston, Mass., police set up a sting operation that succeeded in recovering more than 230 stolen items, and helped them obtain 24 arrest warrants. It was all accomplished with the creation of a phony jewelry store, "MIB Jewelry" (MIB: "men in blue").  Undercover officers opened the store after spreading rumours on the streets that the store would be a friendly buyer of stolen goods. They upped their odds of success by busting eight other stores that fenced stolen goods, which would have been competition for the new store. When asked if they ever worried that thieves would figure out the meaning of the store's name, Police Commissioner Edward Davis' replied, "We don't catch the smart ones." (JW/Boston Herald) ... Which, really, is the big problem with the system, isn't it?   THE PLAINTIFFS' HOPES QUICKLY SAGGED: The North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, state labour court has ruled that employers can legally require  Employees to wear bras. The company involved in the case provides airline passenger screening, and the court agreed that the company was within its rights to require brassieres "to preserve the orderly appearance of employer-provided uniforms." In addition, the court ruled, the employer's requirement that employees keep short fingernails was reasonable, on the grounds that longer nails could be dangerous to passengers during pat downs, and they could require "hair that is always clean, never worn looking unwashed or oily." (RC/Local Germany) ... Of course, due to E.U. Gender non-discrimination rules, all of these requirements must also extend to male employees.   JURY NULLIFICATION: The scene: Missoula (Mont.) County District Court.  The charge: criminal distribution of dangerous drugs -- a felony. The  drug: 1/16th of an ounce of marijuana police found in Touray Cornell's house. When potential jurors heard what the case was about, they staged a "revolt", District Judge Dusty Deschamps said. Juror after juror being considered for the case said they would refuse to convict anyone over such a small amount of pot. Deschamps polled the remaining 27  juror prospects, and 22 of them said they would not issue a guilty  Verdict in the case, saying that even holding a trial for such a "crime" was a waste of taxpayer money. "A mutiny," declared Deputy County Attorney Andrew Paul. Cornell agreed to a plea bargain in exchange for a year in prison, to be served concurrently to a year's sentence on a theft charge. (RC/Missoulian) ... A citizen revolt on this issue isn't a surprise. That it happened in a courtroom is.   ZERO TOLERANCE -- UNLESS...: Officials in the School District of North Fond du Lac, Wisc., feel they took appropriate action against sixth grade teacher Deanna Martin, who allegedly threatened to "shoot" a student for failing to complete his homework. The student's mother disagrees. "Had the situation been reversed and had my son been the one who made the threat," she said, "he would have been punished, most likely expelled." But school officials slapped her hand, placing her on eight days of administrative leave, and must apologize to the student and his mother verbally and in writing. (MS/Fond du Lac Reporter)  ... Mom should demand that writing be done 100 times on the board.
