A fifth grader was suspended in New Jersey for having a weapon in school.
Was this weapon a pen knife? Nope. How about some brass knuckles? Nope. What about a plastic GI Joe with a little gun? Nope.
It was a bic lighter. The kid found it on the way to school and pocketed it. Then some little runty tattletale creep, a stooge of the tyrannical school administration, told on his friend. The kid with the lighter was suspended for possession of a "WEAPON." He wasn't suspended for having a lighter. No. That would make too much sense. A lighter is now a weapon, like it can shoot like a flame thrower.
The father did the coolest thing. He called the police and reported that he suspected that teachers in the school were also concealing weapons. They sort of got the father's point and the suspension ended after one day.
This has passed the threshold for ridiculousness a long time ago. Are they going to take belts away from kids? How about spiral bound notebooks? Someone could unwind it and make a shiv. Everything not bolted down is a weapon. Should a kid have a lighter in school? No. But don't call it a weapon. I have a problem with the thinking behind that.
Any kid, for reasons only known by oppressive administrators, can be targeted if the school regime is so inclined. They can issue suspensions by arbitrarily calling whatever the kid has on him a weapon. A pocketful of change? Why that could be put into the kids own sock and he can make a blackjack. SUSPEND HIM!
This is bullcrap. Progressive bullcrap.
