Pot-Luck-Humor - Cedar Walton, Chet Baker and Sonny Clarke (albums)

This CD reissue brings back a classic set featuring four giants of the modern mainstream: pianist/leader Cedar Walton, tenor-saxophonist George Coleman, bassist Sam Jones and drummer Billy Higgins. All five performances are noteworthy, particularly a definitive version of Walton's most famous composition "Bolivia".  A gem album!

Chet Baker went to Europe for the first time in 1955, although his recording career had begun just three years earlier, he had already become a big name and his arrival was highly anticipated by European audiences.

The European tour began in Holland with the two concerts presented here. The tour continued with stops in Germany, Switzerland and France. In Paris, pianist Dick Twardzik died from a heroin overdose in his hotel room on October 21, 1955. He was only 24 years old and his early demise was a tragedy for the jazz world. Since then, every scrap of music he recorded has become treasured.

These recordings, thought lost for many years, are of the first European concerts given by the Chet Baker quartet in Holland with the brilliant pianist Dick Twardzik. Including as a bonus, two tracks from the next concert by the same group in Mainz, Germany.

Sonny Clark's first session for Blue Note Records and his first session as a leader.

Pianist Sonny Clark's "Dial 'S' For Sonny" was first issued on CD in 1997 as part of Blue Note's limited edition Connoisseur Series, but went out-of-print shortly after its initial release. Now with this reissue in the RVG Edition, it makes a permanent return to the catalog. This 1957 session features a sextet lineup of Art Farmer on trumpet, Curtis Fuller on trombone, Hank Mobley on tenor sax, Wilbur Ware on bass and Louis Hayes on drums tackling four Clark originals (with one alternate take) and two standards.

Sonny Clark's classic COOL STRUTTIN' is a session that epitomizes the Blue Note golden era. A celebrated cast that includes Clark, Art Farmer, Jackie McLean, Paul Chambers, and Philly Joe Jones in their prime swings and struts its way through Clark's originals and some choice standards.
