MisfitsCafe.com - Old Steam Powered Sawmill.... interesting

This photo essay is about the Hull-Oakes Lumber Company mill located near Monroe, Oregon, a small town located NW of Eugene at the foot of the Coast Range mountains.  It is the last commercial steam powered sawmill in the United States.  Their specialty is milling large old-growth logs but they mill smaller trees as well.  The mill is served by a branch of the Portland & Western Railroad but the track is poorly maintained so I understand the trains are limited to a maximum speed of 5 mph on the branch that serves the mill (probably their only customer).  The entire operation is obsolete but it continues on as a working, for-profit business which represents what sawmills must have been like before World War II.

It is interesting that this sawmill can continue to survive.  I hope its anachronistic nature is not a metaphor for the American manufacturing industry.
