Canadian jazz guitarist Peter Leitch has maintained a solid career as a leader, sideman, and producer over the last quarter century. Too resolutely unflashy to make a splash in the jazz-pop mainstream à la Charlie Hunter or the now largely forgotten '80s superstar Stanley Jordan, Leitch is also never merely "tasteful" in the style of the star fusion guitarists of the '70s, and although his fluid playing and woody tone occasionally recall the likes of George Benson or Wes Montgomery, he's not interested in pop crossover material. Self Portrait is Leitch's first completely solo album, and he adapts well to the format.
