Today is...National Gumbo Day!

Gumbo is a tasty stew-like dish originating in New Orleans that consists of meat or seafood, celery, bell peppers, and onions. The key ingredient of gumbo is okra, from the African word which the dish gets its name. The thickness of gumbo can be altered by adding roux, a mixture of wheat flour and fat. Gumbo has been called "Louisiana's greatest contribution to American cuisine" on more than one occasion. It's origin began sometime around the 1800's, and it's popularity has since flourished across the Gulf Coast and the rest of the United States.

There are typically two types of gumbo recipes that are made: Creole and Cajun style gumbo. Creole gumbo uses a lighter roux and also includes tomatoes, an influence made by Italian immigrants who moved to the city. Cajun style gumbo on the other hand is made with a darker roux and never contains tomatoes. On National Gumbo Day, be sure to enjoy Louisiana's most famous dish served over brown or white rice.

Tuesday's Brain Teaser
(answer at bottom of page)

The island of Elbonia have a rather eccentric postal system. Postage for an item can be anything from 1 dinar to 15 dinari, and you must use exact postage. Frustratingly, there is only space on the envelopes in Elbonia to attach a maximum of three stamps. What is more, they only have three different denominations of stamps, can you work out what they are?

Useless, yet interesting, Facts
The first recorded sandwich was by the famous rabbi, Hillel the Elder, who lived during the 1st century B.C. He started the Passover custom of sandwiching a mixture of chopped nuts, apples, spices, and wine between two matzohs to eat with bitter herbs. The filling between the matzohs served as a reminder of the suffering of the Jews before their deliverance from Egypt and represented the mortar used by the Jews in  their forced labor of constructing Egyptian buildings.
Potato chips are American's favorite snack food. They are devoured at a rate of 1.2 billion pounds a year.

Brain Teaser Answer
1 dinari, 4 dinari, 5 dinari.

We must be able to create 1, so we must have a 1 dinari stamp. As we need to create all numbers from 1 up to 15 it's easiest to think about the start and end. We must have 1 to create 1, and we also need 5 to create 15 (5 + 5 + 5). The missing value can't be above 5 otherwise we can't make 4.

If the other value was 1 or 2, there would be no way to make 13. If the other value was 3 or 5, there would be no way to make 12. So 4 is the only value it could be:

1 = 1
2 = 1 + 1
3 = 1 + 1 + 1
4 = 4
5 = 5
6 = 5 + 1
7 = 5 + 1 + 1
8 = 4 + 4
9 = 5 + 4
10 = 5 + 5
11 = 5 + 5 + 1
12 = 4 + 4 + 4
13 = 5 + 4 + 4
14 = 5 + 5 + 4
15 = 5 + 5 + 5
