Pot-Luck-Humor - Ol Hunch sez...............WHEN is N.C. Gov.?

I want to know when the N.C. Governor is going to award the deliveryman a medal for his actions?  That is what should happen; don't give these "scumbags" all the honor and glory.  Another reason, law abiding citizens need to be carrying handguns anytime they go out; for sure the "bad guys" have them and are willing to use them.  This guy is my hero!

More than 100 people grieved together in northeast Charlotte at a memorial Saturday for two men who were shot and killed while police say they were trying to rob a Pizza Hut.

Many of the people gathered said they had mixed emotions – mourning the loss of two young men while abhorring the violent acts that led to their deaths.

The two men – Gregory James Hardy and Dauntrae Wallace – were both 21-year-old felons, one on probation and one awaiting trial on unrelated charges.

But family members and friends tried to portray them as more Saturday night – as brothers, sons and aspiring musicians. And they used the memorial to encourage those walking similar paths to make a change. Family members declined to speak to the Observer.

"We definitely don't condone (their actions), but at the same time, we love them." said Shawntel Gaddy, 28, a childhood friend who helped organize the memorial. "We love them in spite of their choices."

Police say that about 11:15 p.m. Monday, Hardy, Wallace and another man tried to rob the restaurant at East Independence Boulevard and Idlewild Road.

They were shot by a pizza delivery driver. The driver couldn't be reached for comment Saturday, but he told the Observer last week that he had worked as a jail detention officer and a sheriff's deputy for about six years, until 2004. He asked that his name not be used out of fear for his and his family's safety.

Three men walked in, he said, at least two pointing guns. The first one told the deliveryman: "I mean business."

The deliveryman said one of the robbers repeatedly pistol-whipped him and ordered him into the bathroom while they waited for the manager to return and open the safe.

"Every time I hesitated, he hit me. I have so many bumps," the driver said. He turned over his $42 in tips for the night and a gold chain with a Jesus medallion that he's worn for almost 40 years.

At one point, one of the suspects started to lift the deliveryman's shirt. He said he realized the robber was about to see the gun he was carrying.

"I thought, 'He's gonna kill us,'" the deliveryman said. "They're gonna get what they want, and still kill me.

"I pulled my gun. I shot him three times, and he fell."

The second suspect started to rush into the cooler, and the deliveryman shot him too. The third robber ran away and is still on the loose.

Police ask anyone with information about the incident to call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
