MisfitsCafe.com - Boubacar Traore - Mariami [1990]

Boubacar Traore was born in 1942 in Kayes, Mali.  He taught himself to play guitar.  During the Sixties, he was quite popular in his country, appeared on many radio shows, but never recorded.  Consequently, he received no royalties, was very poor, and had to work odd jobs to support himself.  During the Seventies, his fame waned until a surprise program in the mid Eighties.  Shortly after that, his wife died and he moved to France tow work construction jobs to support his six children.  But before he slipped into total oblivion, a British producer rediscovered him again

and signed him to a record deal.  Since then Boubacar has released eight albums and has done a lot of touring.  He mixes blues, Arabic music, and the pentatonic structures of his homeland to create an enjoyable musical experience.  His guitar playing has those crisp, clean tones of a lot of jazz guitarists.  There is a definite blues influence in his music.  More so than what you would hear on an Ali Farka Toure recording.  The late Toure being a fellow Mali guitarist.
